Cy-Fair ISD looking to hire teachers, support staff and police
As one of the region’s largest employers, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District draws attention when it stages a job fair.
The district, which is the second largest in the state with an enrollment of 114,000, is looking to the April 28 event to help fill a continuous need for personnel.
Teachers, administrators and support staff are needed for Cypress Park High School, which opens in August. Next year will be the same when another high school opens.
Touted as a “meet and greet,” the event will feature representatives from all the district’s departments and dozens of campuses who will be available to field questions and meet with prospective employees as well as district staff members looking to make a change.
“This is an opportunity for people who are looking for a position to meet face to face with district leaders,” said Christina Cole, the district’s director of human resources. “They can ask questions about specific campuses and specific positions.”
The event will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker-Cypress.
The district, which counts some 15,000 employees, including 7,000 teachers, has openings for instructors from kindergarten through 12th grade in all subjects. However, demand is especially high for middle school and high school teachers in career and technical, math, science and technology and for those who are bilingual or teach special education.
“Those are areas the state has identified as critical areas, and we have, too,” Cole said.
Cole didn’t put an exact number on teacher vacancies but said the district hired 800 teachers last year and about 1,000 the year before that. Some of the hires filled positions at new schools, while others replaced teachers who retired or left the district.
The district’s police department, established in 2012, has openings for officers. The staff includes five command-staff officers, 10 sergeants, three investigators, three gang-intervention officers and 57 police officers.
“We definitely need police officers — it’s a relatively new department and it’s not fully staffed,” Cole said.
Officers are assigned each day to every high school and middle school and rotate through the elementary schools.
The district also is looking to hire skilled maintenance workers — electricians, roofers and air-conditioning and heating technicians, Cole said.
“We are always growing as a school district; so there’s lots of choices,” Cole said. “If people want to work close to home — we have so many schools in the area — they can.”
Cole said the district offers competitive salaries and benefits, staff development and opportunities for advancement. A teacher’s salary starts at $51,500.
“We are looking for highly qualified individuals that demonstrate a passion for students,” Cole said.
The district hires throughout the year and takes online applications.
Doors will open at 3 p.m. Professional dress is strongly recommended.
