The 60th annual Sylvan Beach Festival, sponsored by the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce, promises many familiar features when it returns April 29-30.

“People come out every year for many years,” said Colleen Hicks, chamber of commerce president, who has worked with the chamber since 1983 and lived in the La Porte area for more than 50 years. “There are activities for adults as well as a younger crowd. It’s always a great time.”

The Bart Crow Band headlines Friday night entertainment and The Randy Rogers Band takes the Saturday night honors. “They’re very popular on the Texas country music scene,” said Hicks. Three bands are scheduled to play on Friday and five on Saturday.

Events begin at 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday at Sylvan Beach Park, 636 N. Bayshore Drive, La Porte.

The recent rainy weather didn’t adversely affect festival plans.

“We didn’t have the kind of flooding on the La Porte side of Houston like they did in Kingwood,” Hicks said.

A parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday. Park activities follow the parade and include live entertainment, food, arts & crafts vendors, a carnival and cook-off.

The Sylvan Beach Beauty Pageant and Revue will start at 7 p.m. April 29 on the main stage of Sonja Angelo Theater. Registration is closed for the pageant which is open to La Porte High School girls in grades 9-12, said Hicks. Past pageant winners are invited back to be recognized at this year’s event, she added. Admission is $10.

A children’s pageant started three years ago is accepting applications through Friday, she added. The children’s pageant is open to girls ages zero to 10 and boys zero to 8. Hicks said the children’s pageant includes many categories, such as “Best Smile,” to ensure there are a lot of winners and that children have a positive pageant experience but no tiaras.

Festival admission is $5 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and $15 after 5 p.m., $2 for senior citizens, and free for children 10 and under accompanied by an adult.

Saturday is a full day of activities starting with a 9 a.m. parade. The carnival will be open 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
