Children invited to celebrate Día del Niño

The Children’s Museum of Houston is hosting its 14th annual Children’s Day celebratio­n April 30.

Called Día del Niño, or Day of the Child, the museum’s event will emphasize the importance of bilingual literacy among children. The day includes special events and activities, including a meet and greet with the Consulate General of Mexico. Free books and other goodies, such as snacks from Bimbo, also will be given away.

Also, traditiona­l music of Mexico will be performed at noon in the museum’s alcove. Children also are invited to take part in a crumpled paper art project, a writing and drawing exercise, a mask making program and other activities.

The Children’s Day celebratio­n will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the museum, located at 1500 Binz St.

General admission is $12 per person and $11 for those 65 years old and older or for those who are active duty military personnel. Children younger than 1 years old and museum members receive free admission.

The event is held in conjunctio­n with Universal Children’s Day, which honors children on various days in places around the world. In Mexico, it is celebrated on April 30 and is known as “El día del niño.” The observatio­n was establishe­d by the general assembly of the United Nations in December 1954. The UN recommende­d the observance be a day of activity devoted to promoting fraternity among children worldwide, according to the UN’s website.
