Texans Pro Bowler DeAndre Hopkins is excited about the help he will be getting at wide receiver.

- Aaron Wilson

Texans star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ star turn last season wasn’t an uninterrupted path to the Pro Bowl.

Hopkins endured constant double-team attention from defenses, a compliment of respect paid by opposing defensive coordinators and cornerbacks. There was frequent bracket coverage to try to disrupt Hopkins.

That might not be a problem anymore as the Texans have injected speed into their offense with the additions of former Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller and former Ohio State wide receiver Braxton Miller.

“Ain’t no more double teams baby!” Hopkins wrote on social media.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien cautioned, though, that the rookies must establish themselves as true deep threats before that scenario of more freedom for Hopkins can unfold.

“First of all, these guys need to come in and do it, so that he doesn’t get double-teamed,” O’Brien said. “Until they actually go out there and do it — and that’s what they’re going to come in here and do — there will be some double teams on a guy that caught 111 balls.

“I think one of the things that we looked at was, in some way, shape or form, trying to give him some help, trying to get it where he could be more one-on-one and things like that.”

Status-quo deal with tight ends

The tight end position was never a vital part of the Texans’ offense last season beyond blocking and the occasional throw to C.J. Fiedorowicz and Ryan Griffin.

After not addressing the position during the NFL draft, coach Bill O’Brien expressed his confidence in the returning tight ends.

“We see these guys, they’ve been back here for a couple of weeks now,” O’Brien said. “Ryan Griffin, C.J. Fiedorowicz, those two guys have really come back in great shape. They have a much deeper, better understanding of our offense, now going into their third year with it.”

The Texans bolstered their depth after the draft by agreeing to terms with undrafted University of California tight end Stephen Anderson.

Odds and ends

The Texans reached a free-agent deal with undrafted University of the Cumberlands rookie wide receiver and return specialist Wendall Williams. … Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton has accepted an invitation to try out at the Texans’ rookie minicamp.
