Langham Creek ousted Cypress Ranch in three games last week in a Region III-6A quarterfinals matchup of Cy-Fair ISD rivals.

The Lobos took the opener 3-2, the Mustangs responded with a 3-0 win in Game 2, then the Lobos clinched the series with an 8-6 victory in the third and decisive game at Premier Baseball of Texas.

“(Cypress Ranch is) a good ball club,” Langham Creek coach Armando Sedeño said in a release. “We played ugly at times and pretty at times, but that’s the way baseball is. Baseball is a game of opportunity. We were persistent and when we had the opportunity we made something happen at the end.”

Now they have the opportunity to play again this week.

The Lobos face Pearland in a best-of-three Region III-6A semifinals series, with all games at the University of Houston.

Game 1 is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Game 2 7:30 p.m. Friday and Game 3, if necessary, 1 p.m. Saturday.

Rams shine

The Cy Ranch mixed doubles team of sophomore Dylan Payne and freshman Melissa LaMette finished the season as state semifinalists at the UIL Tennis State Championship last week at Texas A&M.

Payne and LaMette won their quarterfinal match over Rachel Funk and Lane Adkins of Abilene, 7-6(2), 6-1, advancing to face Phillip Quinn and Chandler Carter of Highland Park in the semis.

The Mustangs duo dropped the first set of the semifinal, 6-4, but bounced back with a 7-6(5) secondset win.

Highland Park won the deciding third set, 6-2, to eliminate Cy Ranch.

“I’m extremely proud of the way Melissa and Dylan competed at the state tournament,” coach Minh Phan said. “They fought their hearts out and lost a close match to a very good Highland Park team. Melissa and Dylan are still young and optimistic to come back to compete in this tournament next year.”
