H-E-B slated for construction in 2017

Bellaire residents will soon have another grocery shopping option with the construction of a 70,000-square-foot, two-story H-E-B slated for construction in 2017.

“It is widely recognized in Bellaire that we need a larger, more premium grocery store to serve our market,” Bellaire Mayor Andrew Friedberg said.

“We are excited to see something of a higher premium for our community.”

The store will be located at 5130 Cedar.

H-E-B has operated a store since 1994 in Bellaire and will tear it down to build the new one.

The current store has about 36,000 square feet and lacks a pharmacy and bakery.

“We have enjoyed our Bellaire neighbors for the past 22 years and look forward to bringing them a store tailored to their needs filled with stellar features and products that will enhance their shopping experience for years to come,” H-E-B Houston president Scott McClelland said in a statement.

Design plans are still underway, but based on past presentations before the Bellaire Planning and Zoning Commission, the new store will have travelators, and elevators will

be used to transport customers to their cars, and that the shopping carts will have a magnetic brake built into the wheels which will lock once on the trevelators. A travelator is a moving walkway or sidewalk.

There also will be a twostory parking garage.

Brixmor Property Group, based in New York, New York, owns the property and leases it to H-E-B.

Current tenants in the adjoining strip center to which H-E-B is the anchor tenant will be displaced since constructing the new store will require complete demolition of buildings on the site.

Those businesses include Thai Cottage, Hong Kong Chef, Domino’s, Jimmy Johns, Rice Discount Liquor, a UPS Store, a Nationwide Insurance office, Q Nails & Spa II and Bouquelle Cleaners.
