RHP Anibal Sanchez is heading back to the bullpen. Manager Brad Ausmus says he will use Sanchez in relief after he returned to the rotation for one start.
MINNESOTA TWINS
RHP Phil Hughes will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. General manager Terry Ryan said before Tuesday’s game against the White Sox that he expects the 30-year-old Hughes to be ready for the start of spring training. Hughes suffered a fracture of the femur above his knee when he was hit by a line drive by Miami’s J.T. Realmuto on June 9 and was expected to miss at least two months with that injury.
NEW YORK METS
LHP Steven Matz has a bone spur in his left elbow and will have his next start pushed back from Wednesday to Thursday. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson says the 25-year-old will continue pitching through the bone spur because doctors have assured the team he cannot do damage to it. RHP Noah Syndergaard is also dealing with a bone spur in his pitching elbow but has less discomfort than Matz, Alderson said.
NEW YORK YANKEES
OF Carlos Beltran left the game against Texas with a tight right hamstring.
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
C Brayan Pena was activated from the disabled list, and Eric Fryer was designated for assignment.
SAN DIEGO PADRES
OF Jon Jay was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right forearm. The move was made Tuesday retroactive to June 20.
