Local TV show to be filmed at Galleria space

KPRC Local 2 to debut live daytime show filmed in a Galleria storefront

KPRC Local 2’s new daily lifestyle show debuts today from its home in a Galleria storefront without so much as a glass panel separating it from mall shoppers.

IT’S a bit chaotic backstage at KPRC Local 2’s new daily lifestyle show, “Houston Life.”

Producers with headsets hustle between the main stage and the green room, where guests await their turn in the spotlight. There’s a DIY blogger, a fitness trainer and a talking rescue dog. Another guest is in the makeup chair for a lastminute touch up, while someone feeds the dog a few treats.

People stream by the set, watching the action and taking iPhone photos. The show is filmed in a retail space in the Galleria.

This is only a rehearsal, but the show’s hosts, Derrick Shore, 35, and Jennifer Broome, 44, are ready for showtime and primed for fun.

“Houston Life” debuts live at 1 p.m. Monday. It will feature Houston life and culture, food, fashion, local events and pop culture. “This is ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ meets ‘Access Hollywood,’” Broome says.

The debut show will kick off with a taped clip of Shore and Broome jumping out of an airplane.

“We are literally jumping into a new show,” Broome says. “We are vivacious and fun. We are people who love to have a good time and want to share all of the fun things about Houston.”

The set is open to the mall; no glass separates shoppers from the action.

“The Galleria has a certain cache, and we wanted to be able touch the public,” executive producer Don Graham says. “We are in a place where we can get instant feedback. There’s nothing else like this on air.”

The set has a clean, simple

look — mixing orange, white and blue — that fits right in next to Nordstrom’s bistro.

Chris Lane, director of marketing for the Galleria, says space is limited in the mall, but the opening was the right fit for the show. “The Galleria IV is the fun, easygoing corner that’s a little younger,” he said. “This is something that is so unique and different, and it amplifies everything we enjoy about Houston.”

“Houston Life” has been in the works since early this year, when Graham signed on to the project after leaving KHOU’s “Great Day Houston.”

Shore and Broome were selected for their talents and on-air chemistry after a national search.

Shore covered news features for a Los Angeles TV station, where he earned an Emmy award. He also has appeared on CBS News and NBC’s “Today.” Broome worked as a TV meteorologist in Denver and San Antonio.

Since moving to Houston in late July, Shore has been sleeping on an air mattress and eating frozen waffles. There hasn’t been much time to settle into his apartment.

“Everything has happened so quickly, but it’s fun to be a part of something so different,” he says.

The hosts’ interests offcamera complement each other. Broome is a diehard traveler and restaurant connoisseur, while Shore is a DIY expert who likes to cook and has a serious green thumb.

They know there’s a high learning curve, covering a new city, but they say they are up for the challenge.

So far, they’ve fed the giraffes at the Houston Zoo, toured St. Arnold’s Brewery to see how beer is made and tried out the ”America Ninja Warrior” training at a local gym.

“We’ve been working nonstop,” Broom says. “We are searching for those gems in Houston because it’s about our lives here.”
