Chain plans to close another hospital

- By Jenny Deam

For the second time this month a Houston-area Kindred hospital has announced it will close.

The Kindred Hospital at 2130 W. Holcombe Blvd., near the Texas Medical Center, will shutter in October, and all 204 positions will be eliminated, according to a letter sent to the Texas Workforce Commission last week. The health care company confirmed the news Monday.

Earlier this month, the Kindred Hospital in Baytown also announced its closing and the elimination of 33 jobs, the Workforce Commission reported.

“Kindred remains committed to the Houston market. Following the closure of Kindred Hospital-Medical Center Holcombe and Kindred Hospital Baytown, Kindred will continue to operate nine long-term acute-care hospitals in the market. In addition, Kindred operates two inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and provides home-health, hospice and non-medical home care. The company also provides in-home physician care through Kindred House Calls,” Stephanie Madrid, district chief operating of-

ficer said in an email to the Chronicle on Monday.

Employees losing their jobs could be relocated to other facilities in the chain, she said.

Kindred Healthcare, with headquarters in Louisville, Ky., is the nation’s largest long-term acute care provider with more than 2,600 locations in 46 states. Its website said it provides transitional care for patients who need extended hospital stays.

A notice on the Holcombe location’s website, dated Aug. 16, said it has stopped accepting new patients.

“We made this decision in order to consolidate services into nearby Kindred hospitals,” the notice said. There is a remaining facility at 6441 Main.

The workforce letter stated the Holcombe location provided services on two floors of an existing medical office building.

A similar notice appeared on the Baytown location’s website Aug. 5.

It said that facility was also consolidating services into nearby Kindred locations and would close in October. The Baytown facility occupied a floor in Houston Methodist’s Alexander campus.

In 2014 Kindred closed hospitals in Channelview and north Houston.
