WHO: Air pollution threatens health of the world
HONG KONG — The World Health Organization said on Tuesday that 92 percent of people breathe what it classifies as unhealthy air, in another sign that atmospheric pollution is a significant threat to global public health.
A new report, the WHO’s most comprehensive analysis so far of outdoor air quality worldwide, also said that about 3 million deaths a year — mostly from cardiovascular, pulmonary and other noncommunicable diseases — were linked to outdoor air pollution.
‘THREE-PARENT BABY’
According to New Scientist, a breakthrough birth occurred five months ago. With the help of the New Hope Fertility Center in New York, a Jordanian couple conceived and gave birth to a child with more than two genetic parents.
So-called “three-parent babies” actually have more like 2.001 parents, according to experts.
HEAT RECORD
A new study paints a picture of an Earth that is warmer than it has been in about 120,000 years, and is locked into eventually hitting its hottest mark in more than 2 million years.
As part of her doctoral dissertation at Stanford University, Carolyn Snyder created a continuous 2-million-year temperature record, much longer than a previous 22,000 year record.
