Brown released in wake of spousal abuse

-

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants released kicker Josh Brown on Tuesday, six days after police documents revealed Brown admitted to repeatedly abusing his former wife while they were married.

The move came shortly after the player issued a statement insisting he never hit his wife during a six-year period when he admits spousal abuse.

Giants president John Mara says the team’s beliefs, judgments and decisions were “misguided” in how it handled its relationship with Brown. He indicated the Giants did not know the full extent of Brown’s problem until last week.

“We hope that Josh will continue to dedicate himself to rehabilitation, and to becoming a better person and father,” Mara said in a statement.

It is not immediately clear whether Brown will receive the rest of his $1.26 million salary.

Brown was previously suspended for the opening game of the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after the NFL investigated his arrest in May 2015 for spousal abuse against his now ex-wife, Molly. Brown was accused of grabbing his wife’s wrist as she tried to reach for a phone, causing a contusion and bruising.

But documents released by the King County Sheriff ’s Office, including journals and emails, detailed a history of abuse far greater than Brown acknowledged before the season started.

Lions sign Bynes, trade Van Noy

The Detroit Lions have traded linebacker Kyle Van Noy to the New England Patriots.

The Lions also signed linebacker Josh Bynes.

Detroit drafted Van Noy out of BYU in the second round with the 40th overall pick in 2014. Van Noy became a firsttime starter this season and had 23 tackles.

Bynes started 11 games and played in 16 last season with the Lions, making 80 tackles.

The Lions face the Texans on Sunday.

Broncos’ Ware’s home burglarized

Police are investigating a burglary at the home of Denver Broncos outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware that occurred while he was at Monday night’s 27-6 win over the Texans.

A person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that Ware’s Super Bowl 50 ring was stolen. The ring is valued at more than $30,000.

Ware said on Twitter that he came home to find his house was “robbed.” He says he’s more concerned about his safety than material possessions and is grateful for “hidden cameras.” Police tweeted photos of the suspects.
