Baylor’s Russell put in concussion protocol after loss

-

WACO — Baylor quarterback Seth Russell went through concussion protocol Monday and said he expects to play for the 13th-ranked Bears against TCU this week.

Russell started experiencing symptoms Saturday night after the Bears’ 35-34 loss at Texas. He was eating dinner at the home of his fianceé’s grandmother when he started feeling nauseous. He went to a hospital and said a CT scan was clear.

After being groggy Sunday, Russell said he felt normal again when he woke up with a lot of energy Monday. He still was going through a battery of tests and meeting with a doctor.

Russell said he took a couple of helmet-to-helmet hits against the Longhorns but didn’t recall any that hurt.

Acting head coach Jim Grobe said he expects Russell to be fine but said the team isn’t taking any chances.

Texas Tech QB’s father arrested

Police say the father of Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes was arrested on a charge of public intoxication during the Red Raiders’ game at TCU over the weekend.

Officer Tamara Valle of the Fort Worth Police Department said Monday that former major league pitcher Pat Mahomes was arrested about 5:45 p.m. Saturday by an off-duty officer working the game while the elder Mahomes was in the TCU student section in the stands of Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Public intoxication is a Class C misdemeanor. Valle was not sure when Pat Mahomes was released from jail.

Pat Mahomes, 46, was taken to the Fort Worth jail before the end of the game, which Texas Tech won 27-24 in double overtime. His son scored on a 15-yard touchdown in the first overtime.

Tennessee’s Hurd will transfer

Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd has indicated he plans to transfer, leaving the Volunteers without one of the most prolific runners in school history as they attempt to snap a three-game skid that has dropped them out of the Top 25.

Vols coach Butch Jones announced Monday that Hurd informed him earlier in the day of his intentions to transfer.

Hurd, a junior from Hendersonville, Tenn., ends his Vols career with 2,638 yards rushing. He was only 440 yards away from Travis Henry’s 16-year-old school rushing record.

The announcement comes two days after Hurd ran for just 16 yards on eight carries in a stunning 24-21 loss at South Carolina.

Odds and ends

Illinois coach Lovie Smith says freshman receiver Dominic Thieman (ankle) will have surgery Tuesday and miss the remainder of the season. … Alex Hornibrook remains the starter at quarterback for No. 8 Wisconsin, which has also used backup Bart Houston more at the position of late. Coach Paul Chryst said Monday that Hornibrook will start Saturday at Northwestern.
