Court passes on Hazlewood
AUSTIN — The U.S. Supreme Court has opted against reviewing the state’s Hazlewood Act, a state law that provides college tuition benefits to veterans but limits financial help to only those who were residents of Texas when they enlisted.
The high court’s refusal to hear the case upholds the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal’s June ruling that the state’s exemption was constitutional, overruling a lower court that sided with a veteran wanting to use the benefits, although he enlisted in the military while a Georgia resident.
