Facing reality

Regarding “Defeating bathroom bill tops their agenda” (Page B1, Sunday), one more time the state government is devoting time and resources into controlling the general public over another non-issue. At the same time, Texas ranks last in too many public services to list while many major economic issues are just plain ignored. Because of this ongoing situation, major players in the state’s economy are sending up flares, rockets and smoke signals to the world that this legislation is as bad an idea as they come.

That means in the next non-presidential election year (2018) we need to all vote in numbers like we have never seen. That is the only way we can overcome the damage to the election process that gerrymandering has already done.

The real world

Regarding “‘Bathroom bill’ battle is launched” (Page A1, Friday), let’s see how this would work in the real world. These laws specify that a person must use a bathroom for the gender they were born with. OK, fine. Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce, with long hair and wearing a dress, lipstick and high heels goes into a men’s room. How do you think that would work out?

A transgender woman, wearing men’s clothes and speaking in a deep voice goes into a women’s room. How will that work out?

Station a guard at the entrance to every rest room and hear the following comment: “But officer, I went into the restroom according to what the law requires!”

See how easy it is? The whole thing is laughable.

Speedy rollbacks

Regarding “How Texans Voted” (Page A29, Sunday) in lawmakers’ first week back, the U.S. House of Representatives is declaring war on clean air, clean water and a healthy citizenry. Not to mention the ridiculous resolution to kill all President Obama’s executive orders since May 2016.

I know we voted 95 percent of the incumbents back in, so much of this disaster is on the heads of the voters, but what happened to common sense?
