Women on the hunt find fashionable camoflauge
Conroe-based business launches clothes line for trendy outdoor wear
Jody Simpson and Kathryn Brown were tired of wearing their husbands’ hand-medowns on hunting trips. They had shopped outdoor stores for women’s camouflage, but the selection was limited and the fabric was the same old leaf and stick patterns.
On a goose hunting trip in Arkansas with their husbands three years ago, they decided to do something about it. Simpson, a Klein ISD special ed principal, and Brown, a real estate broker, would create a line of flattering hunting clothes that no one would mistake for men’s cast-offs.
High Heel Huntress, made in America, is their Conroe-based business. The collection includes water- and wind-resistant jackets, hoodies, pants, fleece-lined leggings and T-shirts. Their camo fabric incorporates high heels into the pattern — and the fashions come in purple, as well as camo beige, brown and green. Most mammals are basically color blind, after all, notes Sierra Bishop, High Heel Huntress’ marketing representative.
Simpson and Brown want to offer women outdoor wear that’s functional, comfortable and stylish, she says.
“Our high heel patterned apparel is tailored to a women’s body and has the same performance as men’s active wear,” the founders say in the mission statement on their website, highheelhuntress.com. “We believe if women feel good and look good, they will be further empowered to enjoy the outdoors, explore the creations of the world, and respect the spirit of nature.”
Simpson and Brown practice what they preach. On their website, there are photos of them with the game they have hunted: Oryx, elk, buffalo, antelope, a wildebeest in South Africa and a red stag in New Zealand.
And now the line is expanding.
“Although it started as a women’s hunting line, it has since branched out and is a favorite for the gym, lounging around and other outdoor activities,” Bishop says.
Their collection is available online at highheelhuntress.com. Or look for them at area gun shows and hunting conventions.
“We we will be everywhere from the Trophy Hunters Extravaganzas, the Houston Safari Club Convention and the High Caliber Gun Show at the George R. Brown to Montgomery Mistletoe Market, the CyFair Spring Market and the Montgomery Funky Junque Market,” Bishop says.
