Leader looted before fleeing

BANJUL — Former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh looted the West African country’s state coffers before relinquishing power, a member of the new president’s coalition said.

After Jammeh went into exile in Equatorial Guinea, officials found that he had taken at least $12 million from the Central Bank during the standoff that followed his election loss, said Mai Fatty, an executive member of President Adama Barrow’s coalition.

Jammeh left the capital late Saturday and flew to Equatorial Guinea on Sunday. His departure made way for democracy in the country after his repressive 22-year rule.
