BARNEY ARCHER

1919-2017

-

Barney Archer passed away at the age of 97 on January 21, 2017, in Hallettsville, Texas, his home since 1981. He was born on August 8, 1919, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Claude & Aline Archer.

In 1926, Barney moved to Alabama, which made him a lifelong fan of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team, and coaches Bear Bryant and Nick Saban. Even after returning to Texas, he continued to subscribe to the Tuscaloosa Newspaper to stay current on Bama Football news.

In the early 1940s, Barney moved to Seguin, Texas to begin a 40 year career with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He began classes at Texas Lutheran College where he met a beautiful coed, Carol Robinson, a member of the TLC choir. They married on January 29, 1944, and it truly was a match made in heaven since Carol quickly became a fan of Alabama football.

During retirement years, Barney and Carol raised and showed champion Bull Mastiff dogs and continued their long standing practice of adopting every stray dog and cat that appeared in their yard.

Barney is survived by: his wife of 73 years, Carol; daughter Diana Loving & husband Richard of Houston; 3 nieces, Nancy Diehl of San Antonio, Dr. Helen Robinson of Huntsville, Alabama, and Sheila Murphy of New York City; and nephew John Salling of Dallas.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents and sister Peggy Archer Salling.

The family would like to thank the staff at Stevens Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hallettsville, Hospice of South Texas, and Dr. Susan Kraemer for their exceptional care, compassion, and friendship. Roll Tide! Go Bama! Visitation: 1 pm to 3 pm, Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Kubena Funeral Home. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials (in Lieu of Flowers): The Cannoli Fund for dogs and cats in San Antonio, or the animal rescue organization of your choice. Words of comfort may be shared at www.kubenafuneralhome.com.
