Texas Southern suffers first SWAC loss; TCU’s skid reaches 3

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Ta’Jay Henry scored 30 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, both career highs, to lead Mississipp­i Valley State past Texas Southern for a 103-89 upset win in overtime Monday night.

Tied at 86 at the end of regulation, MVSU dominated the extra period 17-3. Isaac Williams hit the go-ahead jumper nearly 20 seconds in, and Rashaan Surles got a quick bucket to put the Delta Devils up by four.

Texas Southern (10-10, 6-1 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) cut the deficit to 90-87 with a free throw from Kevin Scott, but the Tigers went cold from there, missing five straight shots from the field as MVSU poured in 11 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

Scott finished with 24 points to lead TSU. Despite the loss, the Tigers remained in sole possession of first place atop the SWAC standings.

OKLAHOMA ST. 89, TCU 76

Jawun Evans scored 27 points and dished out eight assists, and the Cowboys never trailed in a victory over the Horned Frogs in Stillwater, Okla.

Kenrich Williams scored 20 points for TCU (14-6, 3-5 Big 12), which lost its third straight.

ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 71 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 68

Charlie Jackson hit seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points, Joe’Randle Toliver drilled the gamewinnin­g 3 with 10 seconds left, and the Golden Lions outlasted the Panthers in double overtime at Pine Bluff, Ark.

Zachary Hamilton had a shot to tie it but missed with four seconds left.

Hamilton scored 25 points for the Panthers (6-15, 3-4).

NORTH CAROLINA ST. 84 DUKE 82

Freshman Dennis Smith Jr. scored a seasonhigh 32 points to help the Wolfpack rally from 12 down late in the first half and stun the No. 17 Blue Devils in Durham, N.C.

Abdul-Malik Abu added 19 points for North Carolina State, which earned the program’s first win at Duke’s famously hostile Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1995.

GONZAGA 83, PORTLAND 64

Zach Collins had 13 points, and the No. 3 Bulldogs remained the nation’s only undefeated Division I team with a victory over the Pilots in Portland, Ore., in a game that was reschedule­d because of a winter storm earlier this month.

Women SOUTH CAROLINA 64 MISSISSIPP­I ST. 61

A’ja Wilson tied her season high with 26 points, Allisha Gray had 16 of her 17 points in the final two quarters, and the No. 5 Gamecocks held off the previously undefeated No. 4 Bulldogs in a Southeaste­rn Conference showdown at Columbia, S.C.

MISSISSIPP­I VALLEY ST. 75 TEXAS SOUTHERN 74

Joyce Kennerson scored 27 points, but her efforts weren’t enough to prevent the Tigers from falling to the Devilettes in Itta Bena, Miss.

Texas Southern (11-7, 5-2 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) dropped its second straight after starting 5-0 in conference play.

ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 64 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 47

Destiny Brewton had 14 points, and the Golden Lions beat the Lady Panthers in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Dominique Newman and Alexus Parker scored 13 points each to lead Prairie View A&M (7-12, 2-5 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).
