Wizards acquire Nets’ Bogdanovic as deadline looms

-

The Washington Wizards added scoring punch to their bench on the eve of the trade deadline, acquiring swingman Bojan Bogdanovic from the Brooklyn Nets.

Washington also got forward Chris McCullough in the deal and sent a lotteryprotected 2017 first-round pick, Marcus Thornton and Andrew Nicholson to Brooklyn. The Wizards announced the trade Wednesday night.

Bogdanovic, 27, averaged a career-high 14.2 points a game as a starter for the struggling Nets. He will add depth to the Wizards, who are in third place in the Eastern Conference.

In another deal Wednesday, the Atlanta Hawks agreed to send center Tiago Splitter to the Philadelphia 76ers for forward Ersan Ilyasova in a trade that also involves second-round picks. Ilyasova has averaged 14.8 points this season. Splitter has not played this season due to hip and calf injuries.

While many teams were seeking help in trades before Thursday’s 2 p.m. deadline, the Eastern Conference-leading Cavaliers were considering another route to add a player.

The Cavs met Wednesday with Larry Sanders, a free-agent forward who stepped away from the game following the 2014-15 season. The 6-11 Sanders took a physical and met with coach Tyronn Lue and other team officials.

Sanders, who was the No. 15 overall pick in 2010, averaged 7.3 points and 6.1 rebounds in 27 games for Milwaukee in 2014-15 before the Bucks bought out his contract. Sanders, 28, announced his comeback last month.

With forward Kevin Love recovering from knee surgery, the Cavs could use another frontline player.

Other teams were anticipating the return of injured players.

The Warriors expect to have center Zaza Pachulia (strained rotator cuff) and forward David West (fractured thumb) back for Thursday’s game against the Clippers.

Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers said guard Chris Paul, who has been recovering from left thumb surgery, “could play” against Golden State.
