-

Elaine Marie Babin Powell died peacefully early Monday, February 20 after a brief illness. Born in 1924 in White Castle, Louisiana to Cyril and Etta Babin, she spent her early years on a sugar cane farm in South Louisiana with her 11 older siblings. After high school, she followed most of her siblings to Houston where she eventually met and later married the love of her life, Jim Powell. They settled in the southeast side of Houston, where they raised their five children. Elaine was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a wonderful homemaker, who enjoyed watching the Texans, painting, drawing and spending time with family. She was an elegant lady, always impeccably dressed, with a smile that would light up a room. A lifelong Catholic, she was active in several parishes over the years, most recently St. Clare of Assisi in Clear Lake.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Jim. She is survived by her son Jim Powell and his wife Maureen, daughter Nancy Watkins and her husband John, son Bill Powell and his wife Cheryl, son Gary Powell and his wife Beth and son Pat Powell and his wife Justine, along with her grandchildren Mark and his wife Ann, Avery and his wife Jennifer, Shelby, Dru, Elyse, Heather, Tyler, Amber, Jessica and her husband Stephen, Kristen, Allison, and as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The family is grateful for the friendship and loving care given to her by her neighbors and the staff at The Crossings in League City. They would also like to thank her health care providers for keeping her strong and independent for 92 years.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, March 4 at 11:00 AM at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 3131 El Dorado Boulevard, Houston, TX 77059, with a reception afterwards in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
