Duke beats UNC; Michigan upsets No. 13 Purdue

NEW YORK — Jayson Tatum scored 24 points, and No. 14 Duke rallied past No. 6 North Carolina with another lightningf­ast surge in the second half, beating its fierce rival 93-83 on Friday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference semifinals.

Luke Kennard added 20 points for the fifthseede­d Blue Devils (26-8), who will play for the title Saturday against No. 22 Notre Dame (25-8), a 77-73 winner over No. 16 Florida State (25-8).

Kennedy Meeks had 19 points to lead the topseeded Tar Heels (27-7).

BIG TEN

Two days after its airplane’s scary abandoned takeoff, Michigan’s wild journey carried right on into the semifinals with a 74-70 overtime upset of 13th-ranked Purdue behind D.J. Wilson’s 26 points in Washington.

The eighth-seeded Wolverines (22-11) got 13 points from Zak Irvin against the No. 1 seed Boilermake­rs (25-7).

Michigan will next face fourth-seeded Minnesota (24-8), which earned a 6358 win over fifth-seeded Michigan State (19-14).

No. 24 Wisconsin slowed Indiana’s offense to gain a 70-60 win over the Hoosiers (18-15). The Badgers (24-8) next play Northweste­rn (23-10), a 72-64 winner over No. 25 Maryland (24-8).

SOUTHEASTE­RN

Riley LaChance scored five of his 18 points in overtime, and Vanderbilt topped No. 17 Florida 72-62 in the quarterfin­als at Nashville, Tenn. The Commodores (19-14) beat the Gators (24-8) for the third time this season to earn a berth in the semifinals against Arkansas (24-8), which won 73-72 over Mississipp­i (20-13).

Isaiah Briscoe and Cypress Lakes product De’Aaron Fox each scored 20 points, and No. 8 Kentucky (27-5) collected a 71-60 win over Georgia (19-14). The Wildcats will face Alabama (19-13), which won 64-53 against South Carolina (22-10).

BIG EAST

Josh Hart scored 19 points, including the game-winning basket with 9.6 seconds to play, and No. 2 Villanova beat Seton Hall 55-53 in the semifinals at New York.

The Wildcats (30-3) will face Creighton (258), a 75-72 winner over Xavier (21-13), for the title.

PAC-12

Tyler Dorsey had 23 points, and No. 5 Oregon beat California 73-65 in the semifinals at Las Vegas. The Ducks (29-4) will play the winner of Friday’s late game between No. 3 UCLA and No. 7 Arizona for the title.

SUN BELT

Conference player of the year Kevin Hervey scored 18 points to lead top seed Texas-Arlington to a 74-51 victory over No. 8 seed Coastal Carolina in the quarterfin­als at New Orleans. The Mavericks (25-7) will play No. 4 seed Texas State (19-12), a 63-51 winner over LouisianaM­onroe, in the semifinals.

CONFERENCE USA

Reggie Upshaw scored 18 points, and No. 1 seed Middle Tennessee beat UTEP 82-56 in the semifinals at Birmingham, Ala. Middle Tennessee (29-4) will face sixth-seeded Marshall, a 93-77 victor over No. 2 seed Louisiana Tech, in the championsh­ip game Saturday.

NJCAA REGION XIV

San Jacinto College beat Lee 90-59 in the semifinals at Jacksonvil­le. The Ravens (31-1) will battle Panola (25-7), an 82-65 winner over Angelina, in Saturday’s title game for an automatic bid to the NJCAA tournament.
