No. 24 Baylor beats UH; Rice blanks Stanford

WACO — Tucker Cascadden hit a tiebreakin­g RBI single in the seventh inning, and No. 24 Baylor edged the University of Houston 2-1 in the teams’ series opener Friday night.

Troy Montemayor retired the side in the ninth to help the Bears (14-1) earn their third consecutiv­e victory.

UH lefthander Seth Romero was a hard-luck loser, striking out 11 while allowing two runs (one earned) over 61⁄3 innings. Romero has collected 10 or more strikeouts in all four starts this season.

Jake Scheiner scored the lone run for the Cougars (8-4) on a wild pitch in the seventh.

RICE 4, STANFORD 0

Matt Canterino struck out 10 over seven sterling innings, Darryn Sheppard went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and the Owls shut out the 16th-ranked Cardinal at Reckling Park.

Rice (5-10) bounced back one day after being routed 16-6 by Stanford (10-4) in the opener of the teams’ four-game series.

Charlie Warren was 2-for-4 for Rice, which ended a three-game skid.

TEXAS SOUTHERN 6 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 4

Kamren Dukes hit a bases-clearing double as part of a four-run fifth inning, and the Tigers held on to defeat the Panthers in Prairie View.

Sterling Motley went 3-for-4 for Texas Southern (3-10, 3-0 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).

Corbin Jamison was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Prairie View (3-11, 0-1).

HBU SPLITS WITH KANSAS

Zane Otten went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and Houston Baptist beat Kansas 4-2 to secure a split of a doublehead­er in Lawrence, Kan. The Huskies (8-5) fell 2-1 in the opener.

TEXAS A&M 6, BROWN 4

Logan Foster went 3-for-5 and homered, and the No. 25 Aggies (12-3) beat the visiting Bears.

TEXAS 5, UCLA 4

Kody Clemens drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning, and the Longhorns (10-6) beat the Bruins in Austin.
