Area activities offer generous discounts

- By Emilia Benton

From discounts on theater and musical performance tickets to a visit at the zoo, older adults have endless opportunities to enjoy all Houston has to offer without breaking the budget.

Many Houston-area museums offer discounted times and tickets to help older adults get more bang for their buck. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston offers $10 tickets for adults over 65, while the Houston Museum of Natural Science offers $15 tickets for permanent exhibits for visitors over age 62.

The Health Museum offers $2 off for adults over 65; this museum is also a great option for a day with the grandchildren, as admission is included with tickets to the Children’s Museum of Houston, located across the street. Seniors get $1 off at the Children’s Museum as well.

The Houston Ballet also offers senior rush tickets at the Wortham Theater for select performances. These tickets can be purchased 90 minutes before scheduled performances based on availability.

Grand Tier seats are $17 and Orchestra Center seats are $40. These tickets are available during the regular subscription season for select performances. The Alley Theatre also helps adults over 65 save on shows with $29 tickets to weeknight shows, excluding opening nights.

The Houston Zoo also offers savings, with $11.50 tickets for adults over 65, and a military discount of 50 percent off regular admission with valid military ID. Veterans can buy up to two adult and three children’s tickets per day with this discount.

There are also various senior adult programs that aim to offer quality experiences for older adults at discounted prices. Harris County Precinct 4 Community Centers and Senior Adult Program provides adults age 50 and older with educational and recreational opportunities, as well as volunteer opportunities in conjunction with the nonprofit organization, Fun4Seniors. This includes community center classes, programs and activities; information, referral and outreach services; special events including free and discounted tickets; and transportation to day-trip locations.

Precinct 4 partners with more than 400 senior adult groups including churches, civic associations, gardening clubs and community service organizations. Participants enjoy a variety of ongoing activities such as festivals, museums, plays, concerts, and theatrical and sporting venues.

There are many more senior discounts to be found. Many venues and restaurants provide discounts and special accommodations for seniors, veterans or AARP members; just always make sure to ask.
