Outdoor spring events plentiful

Spring has sprung in Houston, and with the uptick in nicer days, local residents know they’ve just got to get out to take advantage of what all the city has to offer. Luckily there’s an abundance of fun events and festivals to choose from throughout the greater Houston area.

With activities spotlighti­ng the best in local arts, culture and food, you can be sure that there’s something for everyone.

• Bayou City Art Festival, Friday-Sunday, March 24-26, Memorial Park

This event, put on by the Art Colony Associatio­n, benefits arts programs across the greater Houston area. The festival will have more than 350 artists from across Houston and Texas either producing art on site or showcasing completed projects available for purchase. • Families on the Green, Sunday, March 26, Discovery Green

For those looking for activities that will also entertain the grandchild­ren, this event will feature activities and entertainm­ent for children of all ages. For the first time ever, this event will also feature an outdoor roller rink, open since March 3.

“We’re thrilled to present Houston’s very first outdoor roller skating rink this spring,” said Barry Mandel, president and park director, Discovery Green. “Visitors are invited to roller skate and make wonderful memories with family and friends in the heart of downtown’s new entertainm­ent district.” Visit www.discoveryg­reen.com for ticket informatio­n.

• Texas Crawfish Festival, Saturday-Sunday, April 29-30, Preservati­on Park, Old Town Spring

This festival, going on more than 30 years strong, offers a weekend full of local music and culture plus more than 50,000 pounds of crawfish .

• Houston Japan Festival, May 6-7, Hermann Park Japanese Garden

Featuring authentic Japanese food, activities and entertainm­ent, this free festival aims to highlight and celebrate Japanese American and Japan Children’s Day traditions. Visit www.houstonjap­anfest.org.
