Village of Tanglewood fights hunger, waste

-

It is said, “Feel what it is like to truly starve, and I guarantee you will think twice before wasting food.” This sentiment is why The Village of Tanglewood is excited to announce its ongoing fight against hunger and food waste in the Houston area.

Thanks to the efforts of resident Ann Hathaway and Resident Council president Martha Smith, it is partnering with Second Servings of Houston, the city’s prepared-food rescue organization. Second Servings picks up excess prepared food from regulated food businesses, such as hotels, arenas and cafeterias, and delivers the food safely to nonprofit meal providers who serve the hungry.

In Houston, more than 800,000 people go to bed each night hungry.

It’s heartbreaking to realize this is equivalent to almost one in five Houstonians — and many are children.

It is essential that everyone join the efforts to redirect the food surplus from the landfills to people who really need it.

The program began more than 18 months ago with the founders of Second Servings reaching out to the Houston Food Bank. A pilot program was developed arranging to rescue food surpluses from major venues in the Houston area. In addition, the Houston Food Bank gladly shared one of its partner agencies, Impact Houston, which serves 700 meals to needy individuals and families weekly.

Once again, the residents at The Village of Tanglewood demonstrate compassion for wonderful causes that benefit many people.

In addition to Second Servings, residents at The Village of Tanglewood express compassionate nature for charity through several other organizations such as Citizens for Animal Protection (CAPS), support of Alzheimer’s Association Walk, Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center and Foster Grandparents program.

At the Village of Tanglewood, residents are able to simplify their life with fine retirement living, from beautiful, spacious apartment homes, amenities and services, to delicious meals and stimulating programs.

The Village of Tanglewood is near the Galleria, Theatre District and the Texas Medical Center, providing access to the best that Houston has to offer.
