Florida Georgia Line’s songs are built for stadiums

Florida Georgia Line is a hair metal band in bro-country clothing.

The duo boasts pyrotechnics, bombastic ballads and blustery instrumentation. It’s a mix that would make Def Leppard or Motley Crue proud. Just add bigger hair and neon spandex.

Monday’s show was the pair’s fourth consecutive at RodeoHouston and drew a crowd of 60,645 at NRG Stadium. This is the first year attendance for an FGL show has been under 70,000.

FGL members Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard keep it country(ish) with frequent references to God, the military and beautiful women. They hit all the cues, including a sea of cellphone lights during “Get Your Shine On.”

They entered, singing “This is How We Roll,” from the back of a pickup truck that circled the stadium before dropping them at the stage.

They charged through “It’z Just What We Do,” “Round Here” and “Confession” with a genuine sense of zeal. The songs aren’t complicated but they’re built for stadiums.

They toasted the crowd with whiskey, followed by a song about whiskey (“Smooth”). They referenced religion (“God, Your Mama, and Me”). They made like Jimmy Buffett (“Sun Daze”).

Kelley put on a cowboy hat late in the set, saying he was inspired by the folks at RodeoHouston. It was probably the most country moment of the entire set.
