South Carolina’s Sindarius Thornwell is the Southeaste­rn Conference Player of the Year — despite a six-game suspension early in the season — and he has lived up to his star billing in the NCAA Tournament. The senior had 29 points and 11 rebounds against Marquette and 24 and seven vs. Duke. Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski called him “the best, unheralded, great player in the United States.”

Wisconsin seniors Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig rank Nos. 1 and 2, respective­ly, among active players in career points scored in the NCAA Tournament heading into the Sweet 16. Hayes has 166 points and Koenig 159. The 6-8 Hayes is one of two players in Big Ten history with at least 1,800 career points, 700 rebounds and 300 assists.

SOUTH REGIONAL

AT MEMPHIS, TENN. (1) North Carolina (29-7) vs. (4) Butler (25-8) When: 6:09 p.m. TV: CBS.

Butler’s Andre Woodson played his last two seasons at Memphis before graduating and transferri­ng to Butler. He is 8-of14 beyond the arc in the Tournament and returning to an arena where he averaged 38 percent from 3-point range.

(2) Kentucky (31-5) vs. (3) UCLA (31-4) When: 8:39 p.m. TV: CBS.

UCLA has the most national titles, while Kentucky has the most wins all-time — making for lots of history in this showdown. The matchup promises to be entertaini­ng — UCLA is the nation’s top scoring team, while Kentucky has won 13 in a row.
