Voters approved the referendum, and the Harris County Hospital District formally started operating on Jan. 1, 1966. It took ownership of Jefferson Davis and Ben Taub.

Today the district, since renamed Harris Health System, has three hospitals: Ben Taub, Quentin Mease and Lyndon B. Johnson. The system includes a network of health centers and clinics and is affiliated with academic medical programs.
