Speculation swirls around Romo’s fate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — As NFL owners lined up Sunday behind Oakland’s move to Las Vegas, there was a lot of speculation about Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones releasing quarterback Tony Romo.

The owners on Monday are expected to approve the Raiders’ move to Las Vegas. Owner Mark Davis needs 24 votes to gain approval.

Meanwhile, the Texans and Denver Broncos continue to wait on Jones to release Romo. Jones has tried to trade Romo, 36, but there have been no takers.

The Texans will pursue Romo if he’s released. The Broncos are expected to be interested in him, too.

Since free agency began this month, Jones has given no indication what his plans are for Romo, but considering he’s attending the league meetings, perhaps he’ll shine some light on the subject before he leaves.

Jones said before free agency started that he planned to “do right” by Romo.

An ESPN report last week said it’s “the Texans or retirement” for Romo. ESPN has also reported Romo will have multiple offers from networks if he retires.

A radio report in Denver predicted Romo could be traded to Denver this week.

Before free agency began, Romo was sure enough he was leaving Dallas that he went so far as to record a video thanking the Cowboys and their fans for supporting him through the years.

Some familiar with the situation believe when the Texans traded quarterback Brock Osweiler to Cleveland, Jones figured the move was to clear the way for Romo and decided to ask for a draft choice.

Jones is under no pressure to release Romo. It could happen any time, including this week or close to the draft next month.

The offseason programs for the Texans and Cowboys begin April 17. If Romo is going to be their new starting quarterback, the Texans would like to have him at practice.
