Man killed when SUV slams into 2 vehicles at toll booth
A man was killed after a horrific multivehicle tollway crash on Beltway 8 in northwest Houston.
A driver in a pickup truck with an attached trailer was paying his toll around 9:30 p.m. Thursday near the West Little York exit when another driver lost control of his Dodge Durango.
The Dodge slammed into the back of a smaller vehicle behind the pickup truck, crushing the car on the tollway railing and pushing the pickup truck forward.
The smaller vehicle was crushed against the tollway railing before the Dodge Durango flipped sideways and slammed into the toll booth, severely damaging it. Video shows the tollway operator inside the booth moving away from the window just before the crash.
The toll booth shook with the force of the impact, and debris flew out onto the road.
As a result of hitting the toll booth, the Durango spun in the opposite direction, coming to a stop at an angle and blocking the exit of the tollway lane.
The Houston Fire Department and the Precinct 5 Constable’s Office responded to the crash.
The man in the smaller vehicle died at the scene.
The driver of the Durango was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
The conditions of the pickup truck driver and tollway operator could not be confirmed.
Law enforcement does not know whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. Deputies did find a beer can in the Durango.
