Romero has 14 Ks, but UH’s win streak ends

ORLANDO, Fla. — Brooks Morgan homered and drove in three runs, and Central Florida beat No. 23 Houston 5-2 in the teams’ American Athletic Conference opener Friday night, snapping the Cougars’ 11-game winning streak.

UH lefthander Seth Romero allowed all of the Knights’ runs but struck out an eye-popping 14 batters over seven innings. Romero, a junior projected as a first-round pick in this summer’s MLB draft, has recorded double-digit strikeouts in six of his seven starts this season.

Joe Davis hit his first homer of the season for the Cougars (19-6, 0-1).

HBU SWEEPS LAMAR

Christian Thames tossed 62⁄3 solid innings, and the Huskies edged the Cardinals 2-1 in Beaumont to complete a sweep of a doublehead­er and extend their winning streak to five games.

Tyler Depreta-Johnson homered and had four RBIs in the opener as Houston Baptist (13-11, 5-3 Southland Conference) breezed to a 7-2 victory over Lamar (15-13, 4-7).

FLORIDA ATLANTIC 3, RICE 2

David Miranda drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout in the fifth inning, and Florida Atlantic edged Rice in Boca Raton, Fla. Ryan Chandler went 2-for-3 for Rice (8-20, 1-6 Conference USA).

TEXAS A&M 4, LSU 0

Brigham Hill didn’t allow a runner to reach second base in his eight innings of work as the Aggies (18-9, 2-5 Southeaste­rn Conference) blanked the ninth-ranked Tigers in Baton Rouge, La.

TEXAS 5, KANSAS 3

Nolan Kingham worked seven strong innings, Kacy Clemens and Ryan Reynolds homered, and the Longhorns (19-10, 4-3 Big 12) defeated the Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan.

TCU 5, KANSAS ST. 0

The third-ranked Horned Frogs (20-5, 6-1 Big 12) scored all their runs in the 11th inning, beating the Wildcats in Manhattan, Kan.

WASHINGTON 5, BAYLOR 4

Kyle London drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the ninth, and the Huskies rallied past the No. 22 Bears (18-8) in Seattle.

OKLAHOMA 6 TEXAS TECH 2

Renae Martinez drove in three runs, and the No. 17 Sooners beat the No. 4 Red Raiders (24-5, 3-1 Big 12) in Norman, Okla.

NICHOLLS ST. 2, TSU 1

Cole Stapler allowed just an unearned run over eight innings, and the Colonels nipped the Tigers (8-18) in Thibodaux, La.
