Treemont’s youngest volunteer: A bond forged between generations

-

It is heartwarming to observe the special bond that has been forged between Treemont’s youngest volunteer, Olivia, now age 6½, and Treemont residents.

On March 28, the “Little Lights” Musical Outreach program — where a music teacher leads a toddler music class and the seniors participate too — hosted an event at Treemont Retirement Community. After the class was over, they packed up and were walking out the door when resident Vivian arrived.

Vivian asked where the Little Lights music class was and was told that, unfortunately, it had started at 9:30 a.m. and she had missed it.

“I stayed up all night waiting to come and must have fallen asleep this morning and thus missed the class,” Vivian said. “I really wanted to come to see Olivia.”

Three years ago, Vivian met 3½-year-old Olivia at the Easter Little Lights project when they made an Easter card together. Vivian did not have any family and felt a special connection to Olivia. The four adults (parents and Treemont staff) surrounding this sweet, senior woman were overcome with emotion. They were amazed at her mind (she needed help taking her daily pills but she remembered Olivia) and how important that afternoon with Olivia had been to her and what an impression it had made.

The message was conveyed to Olivia’s mom by fellow “Little Lights” parents, who called Treemont to arrange a special visit for Olivia to see Vivian.

“This extraordinary young lady has shared her birthdays with Treemont residents ever since. She also visits for no special reason at all, not just during the holidays, but just to bring joy to the residents and enjoy special time with them,” said activity director Aimee Dubuisson.

Vivian and fellow residents are watching Olivia grow into a beautiful young lady. Olivia is a joy to visit with and be around.

“She must be an old soul,” one resident said, “she’s so mature for her age.” Indeed, Olivia has the gift of service and loves the residents at Treemont Retirement Community.
