UH wins; Baylor holds off Texas

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Jake Scheiner hit his team-leading 12th home run, Joe Davis also homered and finished with four RBIs, and the University of Houston routed Memphis 13-3 in the opener of the teams’ American Athletic Conference series Thursday night.

Lefthander Trey Cumbie worked eight strong innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out six, to improve to 6-0 for the Cougars (24-9, 5-2), who won for the fourth time in five games.

Connor Wong also homered for UH, and Lael Lockhart went 4-for-5 with three runs.

BAYLOR 6, TEXAS 2

T.J. Raguse went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, Shea Langeliers homered, and the Bears defeated the Longhorns to open their Big 12 series in Waco.

Baylor jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning to back Nick Lewis, who worked six strong innings and allowed just one unearned run on four hits and three walks.

Tucker Cascadden drove in two runs for the Bears (21-13, 4-6).

Kody Clemens drove in both runs for Texas (2314, 6-7).

TEXAS A&M 9, ALABAMA 5

Aggies relievers Cason Sherrod and Kaylor Chafin combined to hold the Crimson Tide scoreless over the final 51⁄3 innings, and Texas A&M took advantages of five Alabama errors en route to a win in the teams’ Southeaste­rn Conference series opener in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Cason worked 31⁄3 innings of one-hit ball in relief of starter Brigham Hill to earn the win for the Aggies (24-11, 6-7), who collected their fourth straight victory and sixth in the last seven games.

Chafin was perfect over the final two innings, slamming the door shut on the Crimson Tide.

SAM HOUSTON ST. 3 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 2

Heath Donica struck out nine over eight innings of two-run ball, and the Bearkats held off the Lumberjack­s in Nacogdoche­s to remain unbeaten in the Southland Conference.

Donica scattered six hits and walked just one to improve to 7-1 for Sam Houston State (25-9, 13-0).

Alex Hrinevich homered, and Conner Fikes drove in the other run for SFA (20-16, 9-4).

HOUSTON BAPTIST 8 ABILENE CHRISTIAN 7

Zane Otten went 4-for6, scored three runs and beat out an infield single in the bottom of the ninth inning for the game-winning RBI as the Huskies slipped past the Wildcats in their Southland Conference series opener at Husky Field.

Tyler Depreta-Johnson went 3-for-4 and drove on three runs to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, and righthande­r JT Newton worked 21⁄3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Houston Baptist (15-15, 7-6).

KANSAS ST. 5 TEXAS TECH 3

Will Brennan went 4-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, Justin Heskett pitched six solid innings, and the Wildcats upset the No. 6 Red Raiders in Manhattan, Kan.

Michael Davis went 2-for-5 with a home run for Texas Tech (29-8, 6-4 Big 12).
