BOSTON RED SOX

2B Dustin Pedroia hurt a knee and left in the eighth inning of Friday’s game against the Orioles.

Manny Machado slid into second base on a force play and appeared to spike Pedroia in the back of the left leg.

Machado attempted to break Pedroia’s fall, but the four-time AL All-Star crumbled to the ground. Pedroia gingerly got to his feet before being helped off the field.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

Ace LHP Madison Bumgarner was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his big league career Friday after a dirt bike accident that sent him to a hospital with bruised ribs and a sprained joint in his pitching shoulder.

San Francisco announced Bumgarner’s injury Friday afternoon, a day after the accident occurred during a day off in Colorado. Manager Bruce Bochy said Bumgarner hit a slippery spot and went down.

The plan is for him to remain with the team in Denver, Bochy said. Bumgarner is scheduled to be re-evaluated next week, and the Giants will then have a better idea of a timetable for his return.
