Boys

Kevin Zhu, Pearland Dawson

Notable: The junior, who is ranked No. 2 in the state, rolled through the singles draw at the Class 6A Region III tournament before defeating Katy Taylor’s Rohit Patil 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

What coach Ryan Walker said: “He’s never rattled. Guys will play great points against him, and find ways to stay in the point, but after doing it they’re exhausted. You have to play at such a high level to even compete with him.”

Other nominees

Clay Aguilar, Deer Park: The senior’s runscoring double in the sixth inning supplied the only run in a twice-delayed, 1-0 victory over rival La Porte, vaulting the Deer into sole possession of first place in District 22-6A.

Drew Romo, The Woodlands: The freshman’s two-run double in the seventh inning gave the Highlander­s a 6-5 walkoff win and the 12-6A title.

Jacob Whitehead, Pearland: The senior catcher went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored, helping the Oilers beat former No. 1 George Ranch 8-3 for first place in 23-6A. Jason McDaniel

Girls

Star Ferguson, Kempner

Notable: The sophomore had two walkoff triples in two games against Travis to help seal a playoff spot for Kempner. In three games last week, she batted .538 and had five RBIs.

What coach Charity Alford said: “Her walkoff RBI triple was critical Friday against Travis, putting us in a three-way tie for third place.”

Other nominees

G’auna Edwards, Spring: The junior won the 100 hurdles (13.71 seconds), 300 hurdles (42.91) and long jump (19 feet) and finished third in the high jump (5-5) at the District 15/16-6A meet.

Camille Singleton, Dobie: The senior won the 200 (25.01) and the 400 (55.43) at the Class District 21/22-6A meet.

Morgan Stewart, Jersey Village: The senior posted state-best times of 54.57 in the 400 and 2:08.71 in the 800 at the District 17/18-6A meet. Adam Coleman
