A&M defensive teammates Evans, Hall selected by Bucs, Panthers, respectively

- From staff and wire reports

A day after Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett became the first pick in the NFL draft, a pair of his teammates were taken Friday.

Safety Justin Evans went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round with the 50th pick overall. Evans turned heads with his speed, aggressiveness and willingness to make the big hit.

Evans (6-0, 199) played two seasons at A&M after transferring from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Daeshon Hall, who played end opposite Garrett, was taken by the Carolina Panthers in the third round with the 77th pick.

Hall (6-5, 266) competed all four years for the Aggies. He played in high school at Lancaster.

Former Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb, who transferred to Cal, went to the New York Giants in the third round. He played high school football at Prosper.

Broncos pick up Lamar’s Langley

Lamar University All-American cornerback Brendan Langley was drafted by the Denver Broncos with the 101st pick in the third round.

Langley (6-0, 201) becomes the first Cardinal to be drafted since the program’s rebirth prior to the start of the 2010 season. It’s the first time a Lamar player has been drafted since Tyrone Shavers was taken by the then-Phoenix Cardinals in the sixth round of the 1990 draft.

Cowboys take defensive back

The Dallas Cowboys targeted their pass coverage after trying to boost the pass rush.

Dallas took Colorado cornerback Chidobe Awuzie with the 60th overall pick in the second round, not surprising after the Cowboys lost two starters in free agency.

Awuzie had five interceptions in four seasons with the Buffaloes. His 26 tackles for loss were the most for a defensive back in school history. He played cornerback and both safety spots.

Browns finally get QB in Kizer

The Cleveland Browns’ quest for a franchise quarterback brought them to Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer. The Browns selected Kizer (6-4, 233) with the No. 52 pick.

The Browns have started 26 quarterbacks since 1999.

On Thursday, Sashi Brown, the team’s head of football operations, said the team wouldn’t “force” picking a quarterback and would wait for the right moment to grab one.

Kizer, who left college after his junior season, might not be their future, but he at least gives Browns coach Hue Jackson another option next season along with Brock Osweiler, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan. Kizer’s selection was announced by Browns Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown.

Bills’ Jones has pedigree

The Buffalo Bills traded up seven spots to select East Carolina receiver Zay Jones with the 37th selection.

Jones set FBS records with 399 career catches, and 158 last season.

He is the son of former Cowboys linebacker Robert Jones, who won three Super Bowls in Dallas in the 1990s.

Browns cut leader Barnidge

Gary Barnidge provided production, leadership and a community presence for some bad Browns teams the past four years. Friday, they cut him. A former Pro Bowler, Barnidge, 31, was released in a surprising move by Cleveland, which used one of its three picks in the first round Thursday night to select Miami tight end David Njoku.
