-

Carey Ross Sloan, 70, died Saturday, April 29, 2017 following complications related to leukemia.

He is survived by his wife, Michiko; his children, Brent, Erin, Sean, and Erika; his grandchildren, Bailey, Ethan, and Giovanni; two sisters Peggy and Margie and many close family and friends.

Born in Houston on August 27, 1946, he is the son of Frank “Buck” Sloan and Elizabeth Thompson Sloan. After graduating from Bellaire High School in 1964, Carey attended TCU on a full basketball scholarship, while earning his bachelor’s degree. He was basketball captain when he and his teammates overcame enormous odds to win the 1967-68 Southwest Conference Championship.

Upon graduation he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in bases both in the US and Japan. He then entered the business world in the oil and natural gas industry, which over the years led to many moves with his family around the world before finally settling in Houston again upon retirement.

Carey had a passion for basketball and continued to support TCU as an alumni member for many years. Most recently he was present with other teammates for the university’s unveiling of the newly renovated arena.

Carey led an exemplary life. The discipline and dedication he learned both in the service and as an athlete were vital in positively shaping his life as well as the lives of those close to him. He will be greatly missed.

A service in commemoration of his life will be held Thursday, May 4, 2017 with visitation with the family at ten o’clock in the morning and a service beginning at half past ten o’clock at Bradshaw Carter Memorial & Funeral Services, 1734 W. Alabama Street in Houston.

In lieu of flowers, Carey’s wish was for donations to be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas 77030.
