Players to watch
FRED COUPLES
The 1992 Masters winner will be making his first appearance here since 2014 when the former University of Houston star finished second to Bernhard Langer. Couples won the 2010 Insperity. After being sidelined with back issue for most of 2016, he’s off to a fast start with a win (Chubb Classic) and has tour’s lowest scoring average (67.00).
BERNHARD LANGER
Seems to be getting better with age. The 59-year-old is first in Charles Schwab Cup points and has a third-best 68.06 scoring average. Of his 30 Champions Tour wins, three have been at the Insperity. In 2016, he won the Schwab Cup playoffs and the Schwab Cup for the third year in a row and fourth overall. The only multiple Insperity winner.
JESPER PARNEVIK
The defending Insperity champion was the only player last year to post three rounds in the 60s, good for a four-shot win and his first on the Champions Tour. He finished second in the British Open in 1994 and tied for second at the Open in 1997. From 2000-01, he spent 38 weeks among the top 10 of the World Golf Rankings.
COLIN MONTGOMERIE
After being sidelined since March with a left foot injury, the former HBU product and World Golf Hall of Famer, is making his first start in a Champions event since the Chubb Classic in midFebruary. Has four Champions Tour career wins and is second in the Schwab Cup standings.
JEFF MAGGERT
Raised in The Woodlands, the former Texas A&M golfer knows the Tournament Course layout well. He tied for second here last year. In 10 rounds this year, Maggert has shot in the 60s a tour-best seven times. The only golfer to have more than one double eagle in a major (1994 Masters, 2001 British Open).
JOHN DALY
A fan favorite who made his Champions Tour debut here in 2016, sharing 17th place. He has played in six Champions Tour events in 2017 with three top-25 finishes. Can still let it rip off the tee, much to the delight of the gallery. Two of his five PGA tour wins are majors — the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open championship.
DAVID TOMS
Toms is making his first appearance at the Insperity, but played this course on the PGA Tour and in qualifying school. His best finish in seven Champions Tour events in this his rookie year, is a share of fourth in his first tournament. Has won 13 PGA Tour events, including the 2001 PGA Championship, with career earnings over $39 million.
MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ
A 21-time winner on the European Tour, Jimenez is making his first Insperity appearance but already is a four-time winner on the Champions Tour, including this year’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. He stands in third place on the money list this year with $500,842, trailing only Bernhard Langer ($750,250) and Fred Couples ($592,533).
IAN WOOSNAM
Count the 2015 Insperity among Woosnam’s 52 professional wins and his lone Champions Tour victory. Has 29 wins on the European Tour, sixth most, and won the 1991 Masters. His best finish this season was his first event of the year on the Champions Tour, a share of eighth place.
JAY HAAS
A regular when it comes to playing in PGA Tour events in Houston, Haas won the 1987 Shell Houston Open at The Woodlands Country Club among his 18 PGA Tour wins. He shot a second-round 63 to win the 2006 Insperity. Haas has seven top-six finishes in the Insperity.
