McCann placed on seven-day concussion DL

-

Astros catcher Brian McCann was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list Sunday after complaining to the team Saturday of not feeling well. The move is retroactive to May 20, meaning McCann will be eligible to return Saturday.

Team doctors diagnosed McCann with a concussion Saturday. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said it’s difficult to pinpoint when McCann, 33, suffered the concussion, but the toughest blow to the mask the catcher took came on a foul ball May 14 at Yankee Stadium.

McCann played the rest of that game and then caught Tuesday against the Marlins — a game in which he hit a three-run double — and Friday against the Indians at Minute Maid Park.

He was given games off last Monday after the team landed in Miami around 5 a.m. and Wednesday because of a 12:10 p.m. first pitch after a night game.

McCann was not available to speak with reporters Sunday. Juan Centeno was recalled from Class AAA Fresno to serve as backup catcher to Evan Gattis.

Hinch said the team didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary with McCann until the catcher came clean Saturday.

“He said he’s had this (feeling) before and felt like it was going to be OK,” Hinch said. “The way the schedule mapped out, he was playing about every other day. We had an off day in there. So he was not saying anything figuring that (Saturday) was going to be the day that he was feeling great.

“And when he woke up (Saturday), I think he had enough and decided to come in and disclose some of the things that he had been going through for a couple days. I’m happy that he did that but obviously concerned because of the number of days that he said he hadn’t felt great and hadn’t told anybody.” a fresh arm Monday.

Manager A.J. Hinch said the Astros would announce a corresponding roster move Monday. Righthander Dayan Diaz, recalled twice this month, seems likeliest to be promoted.

Although he was charged with only a run on two hits in his four innings, Tolliver would have been unavailable for a few days after throwing 60 pitches. Monday night’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers has the potential to be another bullpen-heavy game for the Astros, as long reliever Brad Peacock is making a spot start in place of Dallas Keuchel.
