High school graduation is nearing. And for many families inside the Beltway, that means big changes. Each year, thousands of area high schoolers slide their tassels from right to left as they move from one chapter to the next.

The 77015 ZIP code is home to more high school students than any other inside the Beltway, which means you’ll likely see plenty of windowpainted SUVs rolling around this part of Galena Park, celebrating graduation.

In 77015, which that straddles the eastern edge of Beltway 8, 3,657 kids are enrolled in ninth through 12th grade, according to Census data.

And while about 10 percent of U.S. kids attend private schools, the rates are much lower in this area.

Here, only 4.2 percent of students in kindergarten through 12th grade attend a private school, and the rates drop from there when kids reach high school. Between ninth and 12th grade, only 2.4 percent of kids in 77015 attend a private school.

So plan on some traffic jams during public school graduation day.

While most of the ZIP codes within Beltway 8 send students to schools within the Houston Independent School District, kids in 77015 are more likely to be found in Galena Park ISD. In this district, the fouryear graduation rate is slightly higher than the state’s — at 89.7 percent, compared to the state average of 89 percent — which means there’ll be plenty of high school seniors crossing the stage this month.

Give them a congratulatory honk when you see those window-paint celebrations on the road.
