Boy, grandmother killed in Brazoria crash
A 4-year-old boy and his grandmother died Monday after a speeding school bus rear-ended their car in Brazoria County.
Just after 3 p.m., an Alvin ISD bus failed to control its speed and smashed into the family’s Chevrolet stopped at a red light near Highway 6 and County Road 99 in Manvel.
The impact pushed the car into two vehicles, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen Woodard.
School officials emphasized that the bus was not loaded with students at the time of the wreck.
“There were no students on the bus,” Alvin ISD spokeswoman Tomika Gamble said. “Only the driver was on board.”
The 4-year-old boy was LifeFlighted to Memorial Hermann and his grandmother — later identified as Karen Salazar, 60, of Manvel — was taken to a local emergency center. Less than two hours later, they were both pronounced dead.
The boy’s 63-year-old grandfather was injured in the wreck and taken to the hospital with a non-lifethreatening head injury.
A fourth unidentified person was taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
The bus driver, who police said was at fault, was cooperative and is being checked for intoxication.
Earlier in the day and one county away, a bus full of Lamar CISD students and an SUV collided near George Ranch High School.
The SUV pulled out in front of the school bus carrying students in grades six through 12, according to a district spokesman. No one was injured.
