New Heights bar excels in craft cocktails

Better Luck Tomorrow is latest venture from bartender Heugel, chef Yu

One of the first things to catch our attention at the neon-glow, electrichued Better Luck Tomorrow was, oddly, the coasters.

Our frosty cocktails sat comfortably (and perhaps somewhat inappropriately) on paper coasters that bore the smiling face of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. It felt odd leaving rings of highball sweat on the city’s top politico, but we dutifully smiled back at the mayor each time we lifted our glass.

The coasters are just one of the amusements guests will find at the new “bar with food” concept from James Beard Award-winning chef Justin Yu and bartender Bobby Heugel. BLT, as it’s called, opened only weeks ago at 544 Yale (the former resident, Dry Creek Café, unrecognizable with its colorful makeover) in the Heights.

Savvy cocktail aficionados immediately descended, and why not? After all, the deliciously garnished collection of tasty sippers is cause for celebration. It’s not every day an Anvil heir drops.

“Our goal with our cocktail menu is to create a fun and playful menu with something for everyone,” said Terry Williams, operations director for both Anvil Bar & Refuge and BLT.

One of those somethings is the Slick Watts, a deliciously boozy merger of bourbon, sweet vermouth, Campari, bitters and Crème de Mure, a blackberryflavored liqueur. We’re itching to get back to BLT for another one of these slam-dunk cocktails. And, of course, to see the mayor’s happy countenance.
