Osweiler passes on talking about Texans

Quarterback says he ‘absolutely’ is good enough to start for Browns

-

Now with the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Brock Osweiler prefers not to discuss his disastrous one-year tenure with the Texans.

Osweiler was traded to the Browns in a classic Moneyball style salary dump as they acquired the remainder of his $72 million contract in a trade. Getting rid of Osweiler cost the Texans their 2018 second-round draft pick and netted them a fourthround draft pick.

Osweiler repeatedly clashed with Texans coach Bill O’Brien last season and struggled mightily with his accuracy and decision-making. Breaking his silence Wednesday for the first time since being traded to the Browns, Osweiler declined to address any past friction with the Texans organization.

“I am not going to go into Houston at all,” Osweiler told Cleveland reporters. “My sole focus is on the Cleveland Browns and just on the present time, working hard and trying to be a great teammate here. I am sure players in Houston, if you reached out to them, you can ask them that question. My focus is on the Cleveland Browns right now.”

It’s entirely possible that Osweiler will be traded again or cut by the Browns, but he says he’s staying focused on living in the moment and not worrying about what he can’t control.

Asked if he’s good enough to start for Cleveland, Osweiler, who had 16 interceptions and 15 touchdowns last season, said: “Absolutely. Absolutely.”

Why: “I think the proof is in the film from the past two years.”

Added Osweiler: “My expectation is always to start. But once again, that is not my decision to make. Now, if I came out here and told you guys I wanted to be the backup, then I’m in the wrong business. Absolutely I want to play and I want to help this team win games, but I know there’s a lot of work that needs to go into that, and ultimately I need to earn that on the practice field. And I have a lot of work ahead of me to do that.”
