GAMES POSTPONED
The game between the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees was postponed by rain Thursday, with the announcement coming on a wet morning in New York City about five hours before the teams were supposed to play the finale of a four-game series. The local forecast called for inclement weather much of the day.
Instead, the game will be made up at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 25, previously a day off for both teams. A start time had not been determined.
Elsewhere, the Cleveland Indians’ game against the Cincinnati Reds was postponed because of rain and rescheduled for July 24.
The Indians next open a three-game series at home against Kansas City on Friday, and the Reds begin a three-game series at Philadelphia.
C Manny Pina and LF Ryan Braun left the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night with injuries.
Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray drilled Pina in the left elbow with a pitch in the second inning, knocking the Brewers catcher flat. Grimacing in obvious pain, he eventually walked off the field accompanied by the trainer and manager Craig Counsell. Jett Bandy ran for Pina and took over behind the plate.
Juan Aguilar pinch hit in the fourth for Braun who left game with left calf tightness. Braun had just been reinstated Sunday from the 10-day DL with a left calf strain.
RHP Jacob deGrom was scratched by the club from his scheduled start against the San Diego Padres on Thursday night because of discouraging weather reports.
Rafael Montero started in deGrom’s place, and deGrom was rescheduled for Friday’s series opener at Pittsburgh, pushing the rest of the rotation back a day.
Mets manager Terry Collins said he spoke with deGrom in the afternoon, and they agreed not to risk a weather-shortened outing for the righthander. Forecasts are calling for thunderstorms beginning around 9 p.m., about two hours after the scheduled start.
Collins said there is no physical issue with deGrom.
