Cubs club Giants with HRs

-

CHICAGO — Kris Bryant, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist hit solo homers, and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Thursday for their third straight win.

Heyward went deep for the second time in three games and has a five-game hitting streak since a sprained finger in his right hand caused him to miss 12 games.

Zobrist added two singles as the Cubs took three of four games from the Giants and finished a 7-2 homestand.

Spot starter Eddie Butler allowed one run and four hits in five innings, rebounding from a sloppy outing last week against Milwaukee, when he walked five over three innings. Mike Montgomery pitched one-hit ball over four innings for his first professional save.

Jeff Samardzija gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts. He also gave up three home runs against Arizona in his first start of the season on April 6.

MARINERS 4, NATIONALS 2: Nelson Cruz greeted reliever Jacob Turner with a three-run homer in the sixth inning that helped Seattle rally for a win at Washington.

PIRATES 9, BRAVES 4: Ivan Nova allowed four runs and 10 hits in 81⁄3 innings, and Adam Frazier hit a three-run homer to help Pittsburgh defeat host Atlanta.

PHILLIES 2, ROCKIES 1: Tommy Joseph hit a tying home run in the seventh and a winning single against Scott Oberg in the 11th after Michael Saunders’ one-out double, stopping Colorado from a four-game sweep at Philadelphia.

RAYS 4, ANGELS 0: Matt Andriese (5-1) allowed six hits over eight innings, Colby Rasmus had four RBIs, and host Tampa Bay salvaged a four-game split with Los Angeles.

DIAMONDBACKS 4, BREWERS 0: Robbie Ray pitched seven innings of two-hit ball to lower the NL’s second-best road ERA to 0.081, Gregor Blanco and Chris Owings homered, and Arizona beat host Milwaukee.

RED SOX 6, RANGERS 2: Drew Pomeranz pitched six strong innings and tied his career high with 11 strikeouts to lift Boston to a victory over visiting Texas.

PADRES 4, METS 3: Dinelson Lamet overpowered New York in his big league debut as San Diego won on the road.
