Galveston County power outage sparked by bird

A bird in a substation sparked a power outage Sunday that left thousands in the dark in Galveston County on Sunday.

Around 9,000 customers across League City, Dickinson and Texas City were affected by the midafternoon power outage, according to a spokesman for the Texas New Mexico Power Company.

Temperatures were in the 90s on Sunday afternoon, prompting the Dickinson Independent School District to offer an air-conditioned cooling station at Hughes Road Elementary.
