BALTIMORE ORIOLES

SS J.J. Hardy was placed on the 10-day disabled list Monday with a broken bone in his right wrist, an injury that will keep him sidelined four to six weeks.

Surgery will not be required, but Hardy can’t participate in baseball activities until the wrist has fully healed.

Hardy was injured Sunday when hit by a pitch from Lance Lynn in the fourth inning of Baltimore’s 8-5 win over St. Louis. Hardy remained in the game initially, then was replaced by Ruben Tejada in the sixth.

Hardy joins first baseman Chris Davis and utility infielder Ryan Flaherty on the disabled list, along with setup man Darren O’Day and closer Zach Britton.

“Everybody’s got their tale of woe,” manager Buck Showalter said. “We’ve just got to fight through it.”

BOSTON RED SOX

2B Dustin Pedroia was out of the starting lineup for Monday’s series opener at Kansas City after getting hit by a pitch Sunday night against the Astros that caused him to spit up blood.

Pedroia was hit in the left ribcage by a 92 mph fastball from James Hoyt in the seventh inning Sunday. He played two more innings in the field before leaving the game and getting X-rays that came back negative.

He had an MRI exam that confirmed Pedroia did not fracture any ribs.

CLEVELAND INDIANS

The club placed OF Michael Brantley on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle.

Brantley injured the ankle earlier this month and aggravated it last week. So upon returning from the paternity list Monday, he was moved to the DL.

Manager Terry Francona said Brantley hadn’t recovered from the injury sufficiently enough to rejoin the team.

The Indians did not immediately make a roster move because Brantley did not count against the 25-man limit while on the paternity list.

Brantley played in 54 games this season and was batting. 296 with 13 doubles, five home runs and 28 RBIs. He played in just 11 games in 2016.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Rrookie Cody Bellinger became the fastest player to 21 home runs in baseball history, connecting in his first two at-bats against New York Mets right-hander Zach Wheeler on Monday night.

Bellinger, who was not called up until three weeks into the season, now has 21 home runs in his first 51 games.

That surpasses by one the totals of Gary Sanchez (New York Yankees 2016) and Wally Berger (Boston Braves 1930).

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

Reliever Hunter Strickland began serving a six-game suspension for brawling with Bryce Harper after his appeal was denied by MLB.

The penalty stemmed from a benches-clearing incident between the Giants and Washington Nationals on May 29.

Strickland plunked Harper on the right hip with a 98 mph fastball, igniting an eighth-inning fight that ended with Strickland being dragged to the Giants dugout by several teammates.

Harper was suspended for four games, which was reduced to three games after his appeal. He has already served the penalty.
