Wednesday’s games

Houston will play host to three soccer matches on Wednesday night. A closer look at each one:

Dynamo vs. Sporting Kansas City When/where: 5:30 p.m.; BBVA Compass Stadium. Competition: U.S. Open Cup. What to look for: Later this summer when these teams meet again a spot atop the MLS’s Western Conference could be on the line. This week, however, they will square off to determine one of eight quarterfinalists in the U.S. Open Cup. The annual knockout competition provides American teams from all divisions an opportunity to win a trophy that has been awarded for more than 100 years. The Dynamo are seeking a third consecutive berth in the quarterfinals.

Dash vs. Boston Breakers When/where: 8 p.m.; BBVA Compass Stadium. Competition: NWSL regular season. What to look for: Fresh off their first victory in nearly two months, the Dash hope to build some momentum under interim coach Omar Morales. Two-time reigning FIFA Women’s Player of the Year Carli Lloyd opened her account last week and could be in a good spot to add to it on Wednesday. The Dash climbed out of the bottom of the standings last weekend and hope to put some distance between themselves and the last-place Breakers.

Mexico vs. Ghana When/where: 8:06 p.m.; NRG Stadium. Competition: International friendly. What to look for: Mexico is playing the first of two tune-up games for next month’s Gold Cup. It’s the second competition of the summer with El Tri already in Russia at the FIFA Confederations Cup. Because of FIFA rules, El Tri cannot use the same roster for back-to-back tournaments, so it will field a ‘“B” team for Wednesday’s game and the Gold Cup. That doesn’t mean this version of Mexico will lack quality. Liga MX is well known as a competitive league so the B players will still bring it.
