RICHARD L. CHAMBERS, JR.
1947-2017
On Monday, June 26, Richard L. Chambers, Jr., 69, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.
Richard was a well-known and admired architect who brought into being some of Houston’s best-known landmarks, such as Marshall Field’s, the Park at Houston Center, the Toyota Center, and the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, as well as the iconic pyramids of Moody Gardens in Galveston. A native of Galveston, Richard graduated from Ball High School and the University of Houston’s Hines School of Architecture. He went on to be licensed as an architect in six different states, and his legacy stands in buildings throughout the United States.
Richard was a past Chapter President of the Rotary Club of Houston, member of the Krewe of Momus, member of the International Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Association, and a proud Life Member of the University of Houston Alumni Association. A true “B.O.I.” (“Born on the Island”), Richard loved spending his free time with his family in Galveston, as well as fishing, boating, and hunting.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, the former Marguerite (“Rita”) Delany; his sister, Vivian Kearny, and her husband, Jim; his daughter, Ginger Williams, and her husband, Paul; his daughter, Mandy Celli, and her husband, Richard; and his grandchildren, Lauren and Jackson Williams.
A memorial to Richard and his life will be held on Thursday, June 29th from 11:30 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, 3028 Broadway, in Galveston. Donations may be made in his name to the Galveston Historic Foundation.
