Fisher among 3 Astros prospects to be featured in festivities
Tucker, Alvarez join OF to showcase organization’s bright young stars in Miami
Three of the best Astros prospects were selected to play in the July 9 Futures Game, which kicks off three days of All-Star Game festivities at Marlins Park in Miami.
Outfielders Derek Fisher and Kyle Tucker will play for the U.S. Team and first baseman/outfielder Yordan Alvarez for the World Team.
The game, which will be televised on MLB Network, is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
Fisher, who also was selected to play in the Class AAA AllStar Game on July 12 in Tacoma, Wash., played five games for the Astros this month before returning to the minors. Fisher, 23, has been one of the best players in the Pacific Coast League this season. He came into Thursday with a .313/.376/.581 batting line and 17 home runs in 272 at-bats.
Tucker, 20, the Astros’ top prospect, is nearing the end of his first month in Class AA, where he’s batting .257/.307/.514 with six home runs in 105 at-bats. It’s expected the former fifth overall draft pick will spend the rest of this season in the Texas League.
Alvarez, 20, the Astros’ return from the Dodgers in last summer’s Josh Fields trade, was recently promoted to Advanced Class A Buies Creek after dominating at low Class A Quad Cities with a .360/.468/.658 line and nine homers. After making his stateside pro debut this year, he has emerged as one of the Astros’ best position-player prospects.
Two former Marlins, Charles Johnson and Edgar Renteria, will manage the U.S. and World teams, respectively. Twenty-five players make up each roster.
